HE French and Indian War was part of a global conflict that took place in the 1750s and early 1760s which is often overshadowed by the American Revolution twenty years later.  However, this is a fascinating time period to me because the Great Lakes Region played a very significant role in this conflict.  Additionally, many of the issues that triggered the Revolution had their origin in this conflict.

 Duration: 1 hour

Description:  Learn about the difficult life of an engage (French fur trader) in the Great Lakes Region during the 1750s and the goods traded between Europeans and Native Americans.  The North American fur trade created significant interaction between Native Americans and the various European nations as they each struggled to maintain control of the continent.

Life Lesson:  Students will learn the importance of working hard to make their living and about the process of interacting with other cultures.

Interactive Element:  Students will handle reproductions of the gear and trade items carried by engage in the French and Indian War.  Lifting a trade bale may be harder than it sounds.....just imagine carrying one six miles around the Niagara portage!
